The Mpehli WeMfundo Foundation emerged from the daily operations of uMalusi Wase Nhlungwane ka Skali Uyasinda, a holding company with a subsidiary named Khipheba no Mamkazi Student Accommodation. This student accommodation business began in 2014, initially catering to cash-paying students. In 2016, we expanded our services to include NSFAS students from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) POSA, and in 2017, we formally registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC).
The driving force behind our foundation was the increasing number of defunded students and the introduction of a new mandate at UJ. According to this mandate, non-funded students had to sign an acknowledgment of debt to pay a certain amount monthly. Failure to comply meant they couldn't register for classes. Additionally, many rural students qualified for NSFAS but couldn't receive funding for their courses, while others fell into the "missing middle," unable to afford their desired courses.
The company name, uMalusi Wase Nhlungwane ka Skali Uyasinda, honors our director Malusi's family legacy. His grandfather, known as "mame wase Nhlungwane uyadela ngoba uhlala udla izinyama zezinyamazane," and his grandmother, the daughter of "Skali uyobe uyasinda unjenge Ndlovu," inspired us deeply. The first student accommodation, Mpehli WeMfundo Foundation House, was named in honor of Malusi's grandmother, Mphehli, who embodied the value of "Caring about others."
